Ready to build the future of AI on the cloud? We’re thrilled to announce the AI in Action Hackathon, a unique opportunity to unleash your creativity and build with three cutting-edge AI platforms.

This hackathon brings together the power of Google Cloud, MongoDB, and GitLab, offering distinct challenges for you to dive deep into these exciting technologies. Whether you're passionate about data, AI, or streamlining development, there’s a challenge here for you.

In this post, we'll walk you through the hackathon, spotlight the partner challenges and tools, and share everything to help you hit the ground running.

Key details

  • Submission period: May 6, 2025, to June 17, 2025
  • Total prize amount: $50,000
  • What to build: Build AI-driven projects using Google Cloud’s advanced AI tools along with MongoDB or GitLab’s platforms
  • Max. team size: 4 eligible team members
  • What to submit: Submissions should include a demo video that’s under 3 minutes long, the URL to the hosted Project, the URL to your Open Source code repository, and your completed Devpost submission form

Let’s explore what this event has in store and how to get started.

What you’ll build

In this hackathon, you’ll get to explore the power of Google Cloud as you build a project for one (or both!) of the partner competition challenges. Discover the strength of sophisticated data analytics, reliable storage, and comprehensive security solutions, all strategically designed to ignite innovation.

As a multi-partner hackathon, that means you have access to both Google Cloud and either MongoDB or GitLab’s platforms for your project (depending on which challenge you choose).

Here's what you'll do:

  1. Immerse yourself in Google Cloud: Explore the full potential of its AI, machine learning, and cloud computing resources.
  2. Integrate with MongoDB and GitLab: Connect and leverage the unique capabilities of these partner platforms.
  3. Build groundbreaking projects: Develop solutions using these cutting-edge technologies.
  4. Access a wealth of resources: Tap into datasets, Google Cloud's AI tools, and documentation from all partners.

Let's dive into the specific challenges and resources available from each partner.

MongoDB challenge: Unleash the power of data

MongoDB's intelligent data platform is designed to power AI-driven solutions. This challenge focuses on MongoDB’s flexible architecture and rich ecosystem for AI applications. You'll discover how to handle and integrate data efficiently, unlocking new possibilities for your projects.

Your mission in this challenge is to harness this vast ocean of publicly available information using the cutting-edge capabilities of MongoDB Vector Search and MongoDB's Google Integrations, supercharged by your favorite AI tools.

What to build

Select any public dataset that sparks your interest and, using AI for analysis and generation—alongside MongoDB’s powerful search and vector search and our Google integrations—create a solution that helps users understand, interact with, or gain new perspectives from the data that shapes our world.

GitLab challenge: Accelerating development

GitLab is the most comprehensive AI-powered DevSecOps platform for software innovation. It enables organizations to increase developer productivity, improve operational efficiency, reduce security and compliance risk, and accelerate digital transformation. In this challenge, you'll get to use GitLab to help you build great software, faster.

What to build

Create an AI-enabled app using GitLab and Google Cloud. Submissions are encouraged to include contributions to GitLab’s Community Edition (CE) or functional components submitted to the GitLab CI/CD Catalog.

Inspiration for your GitLab project

Need some inspiration for your GitLab submission? Let's spark some ideas:

  • Develop a deployment pipeline that predicts and fixes bottlenecks before they slow things down
  • Build an AI system that learns from production incidents to automatically strengthen infrastructure as code
  • Create an AI that turns user stories into working prototypes in minutes
  • Design a system that automatically parallelizes a test suite for 10x faster builds
  • Use agentic approaches to create “smarter” GitLab runners that execute jobs proactively
  • Boost people's career chances by building an AI mentor that suggests personalized learning paths for GitLab users based on prior activities or interests

Why is the multi-partner hackathon model so exciting?

The multi-partner hackathon model brings together the best of multiple platforms and creates amazing opportunities for those involved.

For you as a participant, it provides a unique opportunity to experiment with multiple cutting-edge platforms in a single hackathon. This means you can explore various technologies and integration possibilities while creating projects that actually solve real-world problems.

This is also important to hackathon organizers, who see the huge potential of what can be built during these events. By combining forces, you reach wider audiences, tap into diverse community networks, and create lasting cross-industry connections that continue long after the event ends.

The result? A richer, more dynamic experience where everyone walks away with more than they came with—whether that's new skills, impressive projects, or promising partnerships.

What will YOU create?

We’re excited to see what you’ll create during the AI in Action Hackathon! This is your chance to bring your most innovative projects to life and work with cutting-edge technologies from Google Cloud, MongoDB, and GitLab.
